Kranjska Gora to the source of the River Sava via Podkoren

The Zakelj Valley that runs north Brda

This route crosses the Sava then heads NW along a wonderful valley before dropping down to the quaint village of Podkoren then following the track of the old railway line to a nature reserve at the source of the Sava.

Zelenci Nature Reserve — source of the Save

The Zakelj Valley which runs north-west from Kranjska Gora and is tucked behind a small mountain called Brda (875m), is an amazing place — quiet, with wildflower meadows on either side.

There were some amazing orchids in the he Zakelj Valley

From there we passed through the pretty village of Podkoren, which we last cycled through on our honeymoon 41 years ago.

Podkoren

The Zelenci Nature Reserve is an amazing spot, nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps.

Beer and wine at Gostilna Zelenci

Before exploring the wetlands and lakes we had lunch at Gostilna Zelenci, a delicious salad washed down with  Slovenian white wine for Ellie and a pint for me.
